Candidates Participate In Oregon's Final Governor's Debate
The Republican who could win Oregon`s governor`s race for the first time in 40 years called out her Democratic opponent Wednesday night for her `stunning` reversal on defunding the police and backing prolonged COVID lockdowns.
But Christine Drazan, who led the in the Oregon state House, wouldn`t disentangle herself from election deniers and conspiracy theorists in her own party. `It`s not about other races. It`s not about other candidates,` Drazan answered when pressed by moderators for her views on Oregon`s Republican Senate hopeful Jo Rae Perkins, who thanked `Q` and former President when she won the GOP primary. In August, saying she `wishes all other Republican candidates well.` Drazan stood onstage alongside Democrat Tina Kotek and unaffiliated candidate Betsy Johnson, a former state senator who left the Democratic Party, for a final gubernatorial debate with less than three weeks to go before Election Day, and a narrow lead in the polls. The debate was dominated by the topics sullying the image of the state: homelessness, drug use and support, or lack thereof, of the police. The Oregon gubernatorial race is now being closely watched because a Republican, Christine Drazan (pictured), could be the first Republican to win the governor`s mansion in 40 years Drazan participated in the final gubernatorial debate Wednesday night against Democrat Tina Kotek (left) and independent candidate Betsy Johnson (right), who left the Democratic Party over some of the progressive policies she said `spoiled` the state Kotek, the former Oregon House speaker, said the homelessness issue wasn`t helped because Drazan urged her Republican colleagues to walk off the job. `We lost momentum,` Kotek said. The tactic, so the House failed to meet quorum, was used to slow down legislation, in a legislature dominated by Democrats. Drazan found Kotek`s complaint laughable. `The assertion that the speaker of the House, that`s had responsibility for this challenge for over a decade, would hand responsibility to the House Republican leader - you know, it`s a little bit flattering, but it`s really, 대형중고화물차매매 really, 대형중고화물차매매 really off base,` Drazan Drazan charged that Kotek prioritized `almost everything` before tackling homeles `She`s failed to lead on this issue. And you can`t pass it off to Kate Brown,` she said referring to the outgoing Democratic governor, who in the spring had the lowest approval rating in the nation, . `You certainly can`t pass it off to the Repub `This is the greatest indictment of Tina Kotek`s leadership is how she failed to act on this issue,` Drazan All three candidates said they tentatively approved of Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler`s homelessness plan - which would put people in three large homeless campuses and ban camping in downtown Portl Kotek expressed support for keeping ballot initiative 110 - a 2020 initiative that decriminalized possession of heroin, methamphetamine, 대형중고화물차매매 LSD, oxycodone and other d s.`Starting over, I think, would just result in more people dying,` the Demo s Johnson said she`d ask the state legislature to `re-refer` the ballot initiativ v s.`I think that there was not an adequate conversation about the the downstream effects of ballot measure 110, which has functionally legalized hard drugs,` Joh s For those found with drugs, the ballot initiative allowed them to be fined $100 or attend an addiction recovery center. The latter option, however, 대형중고화물차매매 has been se ly c n. `People are not going to seek those services and why should they with our streets awash with inexpensive potent drugs? Why, why would this work?` Johnson asked. `I would start again,` the independent ca ate d. Drazan spoke about talking to drug users who had no interest in ting p. `We must resolve this crisis and to do that we must repeal ballot measure 110,` the Re ican d. Next, candidates were asked if they supported more law enforcement on the streets - something Kotek d sh d. `You know, Tina Kotek is the original "defund the police" candidate,` Drazan said when it was her turn. `She did not support police even when rioters were attacking a police station. It`s stunning to me that she would talk now that she supports law orce .` Johnson also jumped at the chance to attack her former Democra coll e. `I will join Ms. Drazan in saying I`m surprised by Tina`s answer because we`ve got to start by respecting our police. That does not mean walking with the rioters or excoriating the police when the riots were happening,` nson d. `We`ve created a culture of lawlessness under Tina Kotek and Kate Brown,` son d. Johnson accused Kotek of penning a letter to Mayor Wheeler `siding with the rioters,` a characterization Kotek objected to, explaining that she wrote the letter to the Portland mayor to complain about the inappropriate use of teargas in a residential ghbo d. `I think it`s important when you`re running for governor that you don`t lie to voters. They`re both misrepresenting my record,` k ch d. On the topic of COVID protocols, Drazan and Johnson both hammered Democrats for prolonged lockdowns - as Oregon had some of the longest school closures he n n. `You know Kate Brown and Tina Kotek threw our kids under the bus,` Drazan said. `Tina Kotek just lectured all of us about being honest with voters. She could not be more dishonest with voters on this issue. We had the opportunity to reopen schools. Sh ted Johnson said `the single worst thing we did during COVID was to shut kids out of the classrooms,` and blasted Kotek for being too cozy with tea s` u s. Kotek said she agreed `we kept students too long from t lass .` The candidates also engaged on issues plaguing their respective poli l pa s. Drazan was told by moderators that a pick-up truck showed up at an Oregon political event sporting signage in support of her and Trump and was decorated with the Confederate flag - considered a racist symbol to m Amer s. `I was not aware of that and I will absolutely - will stand against racism in all of its forms,` the Republican said. `And certainly the Confederate flag would not be welcome in any of my cam n ev .` Drazan also was questioned about her stance on abortion, with Kotek pointing out, `The national Republican agenda is to ba orti `Abortion is legal in Oregon and as governor it will remain s Draz aid.She added, however, that she wouldn`t support Oregon taxpayers` dollars going toward helping out-of-state woman obtain abortions, something Johnson agreed with. 2022-10-24 20:59:15 BY 游客 查看:14893 次 以下共有回复:0 篇
